The German philosopher Adolf Reinach (1883-1917) was of the utmost importance for the historical development of the ‘phenomenological movement’. In light of his brilliant thought and the substantial influence he exerted on phenomenology, Reinach deserves much more attention than he garners today.
The overall conference aim is to commemorate Reinach as a significant philosopher by addressing his seminal insights. Considering the growing attention given to ‘Early Phenomenology’ in recent years, the time is ripe to critically reassess Reinach as one of its major figures. Examining his philosophical contributions also presents the opportunity to develop and reassess realist phenomenology as a whole.
Reinach’s work ranges from philosophy of mind and language, over logic and the theory of judgment, to metaphysics, and the conference will approach Reinach’s philosophy from both a systematic and a historical perspective. In exploring Reinach’s rich body of work, this highly international event will thus demonstrate that his philosophy is a crucial platform from which to reconsider and possibly overcome the customary, but often misleading, labels of ‘analytic’ and ‘continental’ philosophy that still dominate contemporary philosophy. Enlisted in this endeavor are both established philosophers and early-stage researchers, all of whom are trained in diverse philosophical traditions and who are currently working on phenomenology from different perspectives.
The conference will be held in German and English.
